'Synchronicity' Neon Sculptures on Display in Long Beach

Press Release:
'Synchronicity' Neon Sculptures on Display in Long Beach.

December 18, 2009, Los Angeles, California

Philip Vaughan's installation of sculptural neon works and drawings will be exhibited from December 5, 2009 until January 31, 2010 on Pine Avenue in Long Beach, California. 'Synchronicity' is part of a large-scale art program designed by Phantom Galleries of LA called 'Let There Be Light,' curated by Liza Simone.

Phantom Galleries is a community-based organization created to transform vacant storefronts and enliven neighbourhoods that have been affected by the recent downturn in business ventures across the county.

Philip Vaughan's first public neon installation was the 48ft tall kinetic Neon Tower installed atop the Hayward Gallery in London in 1972. For 37 years it acted as a beacon on the Southbank. It was removed in 2009 for renovation and an upgrade to its control system. The delays in re-erecting the tower have caused artist Ron Arad to publicly call for the light tower to be re-installed as part of the modern heritage of the South bank skyline. It is anticipated that the sculpture will be renovated in 2010.

English-born Vaughan has lived and worked in southern California for the last 25 years and is the owner of a design company based in Altadena.
